Install the app

TryOn is a Shopify embedded app — installing it adds a TryOn entry to your Shopify admin sidebar, alongside a short onboarding wizard to get your first products live.

Install TryOn from the Shopify App Store: apps.shopify.com/virtualtryon. Click Install, approve the requested permissions, and you’ll land inside the app in your Shopify admin.

The onboarding wizard opens with two ways to bring try-on to your store:

  • Photo Try-on (called AI Swap elsewhere in the app and these docs) — the default model. A customer’s photo is swapped onto the product. Works across every product category (eyewear, watch, shoes, jewelry, clothes, bag, luggage) and activates automatically — no 3D assets required.
  • Live Camera Try-on (called Real-time AR elsewhere in the app and these docs) — real-time AR through the customer’s camera. Built specifically for eyewear and watches, and needs a 3D model per product (see 3D model generation). This can be enabled per product any time after your store goes live — you don’t need to set it up now.

Demo links are available on this screen if you want to see either experience before deciding.

Choose collections and/or categories to bring into TryOn first — you don’t have to do your whole catalog at once. The wizard shows an estimated sync time based on your selection, then syncs those products. Products outside a supported category (eyewear, watch, shoes, jewelry, clothes, bag, luggage) are skipped and called out in a banner; you can fix their category later from the product page. The wizard’s banner copy may still mention only five categories — all seven are supported.

You can always add the rest of your catalog afterward from Products.

The last step opens your Shopify theme editor and asks you to add the try-on button block to your product template, then save. Return to the TryOn tab afterward — the app detects the block automatically and advances you once it finds it. Details on the block itself are in Theme extension.

Once installed, your product catalog stays in sync with TryOn on its own: products/create, products/update, and products/delete webhooks from Shopify keep titles, images, and status current without you re-importing anything. Category is auto-detected per product from Shopify’s product type, tags, and taxonomy — correctable any time from the product page (see Enable try-on on a product).

You can also trigger a manual resync any time from Products → Sync Products, useful right after a bulk catalog change in Shopify.
